Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

The science of eight limbs, as it is traditionally referred to, offers the prospective student a martial art that literally transfers from the ring to self defense with little or no modifications. Utilizing kicks, punches, elbow and knee strikes (hence, "8 limbs"!), one can gain multiple benefits of self defense, cardio benefits, fat-burning/muscle toning as well as strength training. The typical "Thai" class consists of interactive partner pad training utilizing focus mitts for accuracy striking, Thai pads for kick, punch, elbow and knee development and self defense applications. An excellent martial art for all ages, genders and body types as mastery depends more on the development of leverage and timing than brute strength!

Thai Boxing, along with Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu is one of the hottest most sought after martial arts today!

Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do is based on the principles and concepts of Bruce Lee and perpetuated through his close friend, student and training partner, Dan Inosanto. While Lee referred to JKD as a "personal expression" and therefore could not be "taught" as such, he established a progressive curriculum for the development of fighting attributes that he referred to as Jun Fan Gung Fu. Consequently, the Jun Fan/JKD student, through research and development of self through cross training in a multitude of combative arts, strives to become proficient in the 4 ranges of kicking, striking, trapping and grappling. The high level Jun Fan/JKD practioner is able to move fluidly through all 4 ranges.

Jun Fan/JKD could be looked upon as the original mixed martial art!

Boxing is known as the Sweet Science because of its intricate combinations that are meant to set up knockout power and the defensive movements and footwork that are meant to teach someone how to conserve their energy for longer periods of time than normal. Boxing is a Ring Sport meaning that its fundamental use is inside the Ring instead of in the street; however, to assume that the stamina, speed, and smarts offered by boxing can be translated into a self defense application is to forget the fact that one sweet punch can end a confrontation, and that guy that knows how to set up that one sweet punch the most efficiently has a darn good chance of coming out on top.

Systema, Russian Martial Art, is a drill-based system that aids each student in increasing awareness of his own body and his surroundings. The drills challenge each student to survive in different scenarios, building from simple to difficult. This drill-based system allows the student to explore his/her own strengths and weakness, learning to exploit the former and minimize the latter. Furthermore Systema increases each individual's understanding of how to capitalize on structural weaknesses found in the human body for maximum affect with minimum effort.

Systema is geared towards real life situations a person may find himself in during the course of a violent situation. The training helps each individual to understand his/her best chance of survival. Situations include but are not limited to:

Multiple assailants armed and unarmed

  • Surviving being knocked to the ground and kicked by multiple people
  • Simple yet effective takedowns that minimize the chance of injury to the student
  • Takedowns using teams
  • Dealing with multiple attackers
  • Reducing stress by breathing properly
  • Edge weapon defense
  • Ground survival tactics
  • Weapon retention
  • And much more.

Sil-Lum (or Shaolin) Kung-Fu originated in Shao-Lin Temples hundreds of years ago. Although the exact origins are difficult to trace, the birth of Sil-Lum is usually accredited to the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma who introduced the 18 Lohan movements to Shao-Lin monks as a form of exercise. The Lohan eventually gave rise to the five basic animal styles that Kung-Fu is famous for: Crane, Leopard, Tiger, Snake, and Dragon.

For the beginner, there are basic control moves designed to defend one against certain grabs, holds, and threatening maneuvers. In addition, the student is taught basic kicks, how to do them properly and effectively, as well as how to punch and block an attacker. The intermediate student learns the more complicated techniques, which include many knife attack defenses, weapons training, sweeps, takedowns, and light sparring, which trains the student to use the techniques learned in a fighting situation.

For the long-term student the striving for perfection of form continues. The dedicated will acquire confidence, self-discipline, and build strength of body and character. Also taught is Tai Chi Chuan (The Grand Ultimate), the exercise of choice for a billion people daily. It teaches hand-eye coordination, balance, and relaxation while training effective self-defense movement. This is ideal for maintaining one's health and training one's body to be calm yet responsive. Kung-fu has much to offer everyone due to the adaptive nature of the art.

The kettlebell is a cast iron weight, which resembles a basketball with a handle. An ancient Russian exercise device, the kettlebell has long been a favorite in that country for those seeking a special edge in strength and endurance.

In 2001, Pavel Tsatsouline introduced The Russian Kettlebell Challenge—and forever altered the landscape of American fitness, with his breakthrough system for achieving astonishingly rapid yet consistent gains in muscle strength, explosive power, energy and functional performance with a single, simple tool: the kettlebell.

The elite of the US military and law enforcement have recognized the power of the Russian kettlebell, ruggedly simple and deadly effective as an AK-47. You can find Pavel's certified RKC instructors among Force Recon Marines, Department of Energy nuclear security teams, the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, the Secret Service Counter Assault Team, and now here, at Ultimate Gym!

As the Russian kettlebell has become a hit among those whose lives depended on their strength and conditioning, it has taken off among hard people from all walks of life: martial artists, athletes, and regular hard comrades. So, are you ready to join the ranks? Sign up for a the Fundamentals Class today!
